      WASHINGTON, – Today the American Petroleum Institute reported that the first four months of this year saw U.S. petroleum demand average thousand barrels a day above the same period in despite higher prices, a sign of solid economic activity. April also saw the U.S. produce a record million barrels per day (MBD) of oil. As a result of the surge of U.S. shale oil production, U.S. demand for OPEC crude oil imports has dropped over the past decade. In , the U.S. imported million barrels per day (BPD) of crude oil, of which million BPD (~48%) came from OPEC. By , U.S. imports had dropped to million BPD, with million BPD (~40%) from OPEC.
